Something happened with Prague this year. Google's own travel trends data shows search interest in flights to the Czech Republic up 180 percent year over year among US travelers, the biggest jump of any destination they track. Seven of 2026's top ten trending destinations are in Eastern Europe, and Prague is the headliner.

I can tell you exactly why: it is the last famous European city where the prices still feel like a misprint.

While Paris and London absorbed this summer's 24 percent airfare surge on top of already brutal daily costs, Prague quietly kept serving 2 dollar beers under a castle that looks like a render. Word got out. Here is what the trip actually costs before the word gets any further out.

Where the money goes, line by line

Accommodation is the biggest single lever. Hostel beds run 15 to 25 dollars. Solid three-star hotels in walkable neighborhoods run 70 to 110 dollars a night for a double, roughly half of what equivalent rooms cost in Paris. The crowd problem, and the two-street solution

Fair warning: the Old Town Square and Charles Bridge in peak season are now shoulder to shoulder from mid morning. The trending destination effect is real and visible.

It is also weirdly shallow. Prague's crowds concentrate on a corridor about 500 meters wide, and dissolve two streets away. The fix is to sleep outside it. Vinohrady is leafy, full of the cafes locals actually use, and 10 minutes from the center by tram. Karlin is the former industrial quarter turned food neighborhood, with hotel rates 20 to 30 percent below Old Town equivalents. Both are better Prague than the postcard corridor anyway.

And do the bridge at dawn once. At 6am Charles Bridge holds photographers, seagulls and nobody else, and you understand instantly why everyone came.

A Czech tourism board representative put the season's mood well in a spring interview with a trade outlet:

We are seeing demand we would once have needed a decade to build. Our challenge now is spreading visitors beyond the same four hundred meters everyone photographs.

Consider that an invitation. Day trips to Kutna Hora with its bone church (about 2 dollars by train, weirdly) or Cesky Krumlov spread you out and cost almost nothing.

Getting there and around for less

From the airport, the public bus plus metro combination costs about 2 dollars and takes 45 minutes. Should you go before the trend peaks?

Yes, and preferably in shoulder season. September and October give you 18-degree afternoons, golden light on the sandstone, hotel rates 25 percent under summer, and crowds a third thinner. The 180 percent search surge suggests 2027 summer will be busier and pricier still; trends like this one rarely reverse quickly.

Prague spent thirty years as the budget travel community's open secret. The secret is now extremely out. The prices, for one more season at least, have not caught up with the publicity. That gap is your trip.

Abstract numbers convince the head; a diary convinces the wallet. Here is what a real mid-range day in Prague looks like for two people, itemized from a recent visit.
